One of the seven sons of Lord Brahma, Atri Maharishi is the ancestor of some Brahmin and Vaishya communities.

Mata, or mother Anusuya, is a daughter of Kardama Prajapati. She had three sons and one daughter, including Soma, Dattatreya, Durvasa, and Shubhatreyi, who embody the defined trinity Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. In exchange for helping Devi Anusuya to raise the sun to the east every morning, the trinity channeled through Brahmarishi Atri.

Atri Maharishi performed intense tapas on the Para Brahma, causing the entire world to experience its unbearable heat. As a result, Lord Brahma had to take on human form and grant the sage a boon. This boon was the assurance of a son being born at the right time. During his continued penance, the Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva (Rudra) appeared before Atri and declared their equal status with distinct roles. Impressed by his devotion, they promised to be reborn as his children. One of these divine children is known as Chandratreya or Chandratre, while another goes by Krishnatreya or Krishnatre.
