In ancient India, there was a king named Vishvamitra who was also known as Kaushika, or “descendant of Kusha.” He came from a line of powerful rulers – his great-grandfather was the renowned King Kusha, and his father was the brave warrior Kushanabha. His story is featured in Bala Kanda’s prose 51 of the Valmiki Ramayana. Kushanabha, who was the son of Prajapati’s creation, ruled over the land with great strength and righteousness. His son Gaadhi, a well-known figure, gave birth to Vishvamitra – a great saint of immense splendor. During his reign, Vishvamitra governed the kingdom for countless years. The Puranas also contain tales of his life that differ from those found in the Ramayana. According to Mahabharatha’s Vishnu Purana and Harivamsha chapter 27, Vishvamitra’s birth is described as being part of the Shatamarshana lineage – descendants of King Trasadasyu who was originally from the Purukutsa dynasty.
