In Kanchipuram, Tamilnadu, India, Varadharaja Perumal Temple, or Hastagiri or Attiyuran, is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

History

This ancient temple was built by the Cholas in 1053 and is considered one of the 108 divyadesams, or holy abodes of Vishnu. It is located in Vishnu Kanchi, a section of Kanchipuram known for its many renowned Vishnu temples, including this one where the great Hindu scholar Ramnujacharya is said to have resided. The temple sits on a vast 23-acre (93,000 m2) complex and is renowned for its sanctity and rich history. A unique feature of the temple is the exquisite gold-plated lizards adorning the sanctum. Originally constructed in 1053, it was later expanded under the rule of prominent Chola kings Kulottunga Chola I and Vikrama Chola. In the 14th century, subsequent Chola rulers added another wall and a gopura to the temple. The enormous Prakaram and intricately carved tower are also notable features.
