About Temple

Vaitheeswaran koil, a renowned pilgrimage site in South India, is steeped in tradition. It is commonly referred to as Pullirukkuvelur, derived from the names of four revered figures: Pul-bird-jatayu, Irukku – Rig Veda, Velmurugan, and Oor-sun. Each of them has worshipped here, making it a sacred place. Other names associated with this location include Jatayupuri, Vedpuri, Angarakapuram, and more. Locals affectionately call it Vinaitheerthan Koil and Thayyalnayaki Koil. The sthala vriksham or sacred tree is Vembu (Margosa), and the holy pond is known as Siddhartha Theertham. In the southern praharam of this temple lies the famous Jadayu Kundam from the epic Ramayana.

History

There is a fine bronze image of Angaraka to which pooja is done daily. It is said that Murugan got his vel (Lance) here. People possessed by evil spirits are cured by bathing for a period in the tank. With Amritha Sanjeevi and Vilvathadi Mann, Vaidyanathaswamy is said to cure 4,480 diseases.

Every month, a grand abhishegam is performed to Sri Selva Muthukumaraswamy on the Karthigai day. Tuesdays are also special as the idol of Angaraka is taken in procession on his Goat mount. Despite being a temple of great size and importance, one can still find traces of Pallava Art, such as the Yali pillars. Thirugnanasambandar, Thiruvanukarasar, and Arunagirinathar have all sung in praise of the Lord here. Many children from this area come to Vaitheeswarankoil to have their locks of hair offered to Vaithianathaswamy. Devotees also offer salt and pepper at the Sannadhi. This temple promises to cure all ailments of the body, mind, and spirit for every devotee. The margosa tree standing beside the eastern gopuram whispers the celestial healer’s praises through its thick foliage, reminding us of His power to heal all human diseases.
