The renowned Siddhar Agasthiyar is mentioned in the Vedas as a revered sage. His clan is credited with “authoring” many mantras in the Rig Veda, the oldest and most revered Hindu text. It is believed that the Supreme Brahman first revealed these mantras to Agasthiyar in his mind. Some consider him to be the greatest of the Seven Sages or Saptarshis, also known as Agasthiyar Samhita. This name is sometimes written as Agasti or Agathiyar and also holds significance in relation to Lord Shiva. According to myth, Urvashi, where Mitra and Varuna, two Hindu gods, gave birth to Agasthiyar. The Indian astronomical term for the Canopus star is also named after him and is known as the “cleanser of waters” due to its rising coinciding with a calming of the Indian Ocean.
